...at the end of the tunnel that is, not as in "don't go towards the light!" :)
Yesterday was the first day of my preceptorship, this is when 2nd years get paired up with docs generally in primary care office and we basically get a little taste of good things to come. I was fortunate enough to get a doc who, while out in the middle of nowhere (ever heard of albion, pa? probably not...it's really close to ohio and not much else. it's about 30some miles outside of erie and for the last 15 there is zero cell phone service.)got a myriad of different cases in the short 4 hours that I was there. Think the measles are eradicated? Meet the abundant Amish population that apparently inhabit a large majority of the farms I passed on my way there.
Ever seen a massively MRSA infected spider bite? Enter the 17yo boy who was so embarrassed about the site of his bite that he canceled the appointment his mother made for him. Twice. Unfortunately for him he got bit right on his bum and he was mortified. Especially when the doc decided that he needed to get the infected pus out of it. This involved all 3 female medical students, a female nurse and the doc in the room while he used a 10 blade to cut the thing open. I think that was the only reason he didn't scream as the pus was getting squeezed out of it. Note to self, next time you offer to let a pt hold your hand, remove rings so they don't get crushed into your fingers... wear gloves for the love of god not quite this bad, and not a cyst, but this is what the stuff that came out of it looked like
Other than that, it's been a pretty light week, I'm having some of my last lectures and labs for some of our classes and it's beginning to sink in that I'm finally almost done, has it really been almost 2 years? already?!
The thing that makes me most happy at the moment is the fact that it's sunny and not quite 60 degrees outside with more sun and warmth on the weekend :) Believe when I tell you this is a small miracle considering last year erie beat out seattle for the city with the fewest days of sun during the year and last spring it snowed a few inches on april 28th. While there may still be more crappy weather to come, I'll take what i can get for now.
p.s. i had special K with fresh strawberries for breakfast dad, i know you were wondering :)
